Intermediate Lesson 1:  Colorizing and Blend Modes

Download:  intclass1dl.zip

Info:  In this class we will cover the Colorize and Hue/Saturation/Lightness adjustments and using blend modes to colorize.

1. Extract the intclass1dl1.psp intclass1dl2.psp, and intclass1dl3.jpg from the intclass1dl.zip file and open them in PSP 8.

2. Click on intclass1dl1 to make it active.  Hide the photo layer in the layer palette by clicking on the eye icon in the layer palette.  Click on the horse layer to make it active.  To save time I eliminated the background around the horse so we could just color the horse.  In your layer palette scroll over until you see the padlock icon.  Click on Lock Transparency (the padlock icon) on the horse layer (the padlock will turn blue) so that we maintain the transparency of the layer.

3. Duplicate the image (Shift+D) twice and close the original.

4. Choose one of the copies.  Click on Adjust || Hue and Saturation || Colorize (Shift+L).  Adjust the Hue and Saturation levels until the horse is a color you like.  If you click and hold on the down arrow beside Hue you will see a color bar that will help you choosing a color.  The same thing goes for Saturation.  I set mine to Hue: 8 and Saturation: 61.

5. Click on the Eye icon beside the photo layer to turn the visibility back on.  Click Layers || Merge || Merge all Flatten.  Save and Close.

6. Click on the remaining copy of the intclass1dl1 image to make it active. Make the photo layer visible.  Make sure the horse layer is active and that transparency is still locked (the padlock will be blue).

7. Select the Flood Fill tool Match Mode = None, Blend Mode = Normal, Opacity = 100, and Sample merged is NOT checked.

8. Set your foreground color to something you like. I chose #593215.  Click in your image, since transparency is locked only the horse is filled.

9. In the layer palette select each blend mode.  The default blend mode is Normal click the little arrow beside Normal to access the other blend modes.  You will see a variety of different colors just changing the blend mode.

10. In the layer palette adjust the transparency of the horse layer to 50 by moving the transparency slider (beside the eye icon).  Select each Blend mode again.

11. Choose the Blend mode and transparency level you like best.  I chose Multiply and 50.  Save and close.

12. Click on intclass1dl2 to make it active.  Duplicate it twice and close the original.

13. This time we are going to color selections. To make things faster I have the selections saved to alpha channel.  Click Selections || Load/Save Selection || Load Selection from Alpha Channel and choose the water selection.

14. Select the Flood Fill tool Match Mode = None, Blend Mode = Color (Legacy), Opacity = 100, and Sample merged is NOT checked.  Set the foreground color to #057DAF or a color of your choice.

15. Click on the water to fill it.  Note:  This time instead of using the Blend mode on the layers palette we used the one with the flood tool.  You can accomplish the same things using the Blend Modes and Opacity settings of the Flood tool as you do with the Blend Modes and Transparency tool on the layers palette.

16. Click Selections || Load/Save Selection || Load Selection from Alpha Channel and choose the rose selection.

17. Add a new Raster layer change the Blend mode of the Flood tool back to Normal.  Change the Foreground to #F3B9F5 or a color of your choice.  Click in the image to fill it.  Using the layer palette change the blend modes again. I got some good results with Saturation, Color, Color (Legacy), Multiply, Difference, and Burn at 100% transparency.  Tip:  If you want to save the different results when you find one you like click on the title bar of the image and Duplicate (Shift+D) and Save.  You will still have the original to continue trying other blend modes.  Save and close.

18. Click on the last copy of intclass1dl2 to make it active.  Click Selections || Load/Save Selection || Load Selection from Alpha Channel and choose the water selection.

19. Click Adjust || Hue and Saturation || Hue/Saturation/Lightness.  This is another way to colorize and adjust existing colors.  Click the box in front of Colorize.  Adjust the Hue, Saturation, and Lightness sliders until the water is a color you want it.  I chose Hue = 213, Saturation = 51, and Lightness = -24.  Click Ok

20. Click Selections || Load/Save Selection || Load Selection from Alpha Channel and choose the rose selection.  Use Hue/Saturation/Lightness to color the rose (just like you did for the water).  I chose Hue = 62, Saturation = 50, and Lightness = 0.  Click Ok.  Save and Close.

21. Click intclass1dl3.jpg to make it active.  Duplicate it and close the original.

22. Select the Flood Fill tool Match Mode = None, Blend Mode = Color (Legacy), Opacity = 100, and Sample merged is NOT checked.  Set the foreground color to #3F02DA or a color of your choice.

23. Click in the image to fill it.  I use this method a lot on patterns I want to change the color on.  Save and Close.

Notes:  As you can see it is easy to change the color of just about anything to suit your taste.  The hardest part is making the selections.  It is not really hard just time consuming.  I used the Background Eraser to eliminate the background on the horse picture.  I used the Freehand Selection tool to select the rose and saved the selection (rose) then inverted the selection and saved the new selection (water).
